A legacy built on faith, family & craft.

JJ was a real person – the driving force behind our business.

1958
A wild kid finds his calling
James Johnston was a good looking, wild kid from a poorer part of Highland Park, MI. He dropped out of high school after his 10th grade year, and it wasn't until he met and married Judith that he got serious about his career in hair. In 1958, at the age of 18, JJ went to La Mar Barber College in Highland Park, Michigan.
The rise
Top of his class
JJ moved to the top of his class, winning competitions and the respect of distinguished people in the industry. JJ's trendy styling got the attention of TV interviews and earned him several anchormen as clients.
Age 29 · A life remade
JJ's wild streak nearly destroyed his future. Heavy drinking and promiscuity pushed his wife of five years to file for divorce, and he started to realize his life was headed in the wrong direction. At 29, after a close brush with death involving Charles Manson at a party in LA, JJ chose to walk away from his rebellious lifestyle and follow Jesus. That decision sparked a profound transformation. His marriage was restored, and his dependence on alcohol—and the chaos that came with it—came to an end.
The hard years
Faith as the anchor
From then on, life still brought its share of highs and lows, but JJ's faith became the anchor that carried him through multiple business fails, life-threatening health battles, the loss of his home, and difficult seasons with his children.
1984
The first chair in Troy
JJ's Barber Shop opened its doors in 1984 in Troy, Michigan. It quickly became a local sensation, particularly among students and athletes; it was common for entire sports teams to visit for fresh cuts before a big game.
2006
The next generation
In 2006, founder JJ retired, handing the reins of the Troy shop to his family who carries his standards forward to this day. JJ passed away in February 2017, but his vision carried on.
Today
The vision lives on
Today, JJ's vision lives on in Troy — the same chairs, the same craft, and the same commitment to loving and serving the community like Jesus.
